I Can Manage
I-Can Manage stands as an e-learning, self-management initiative tailored to equip both patients and caregivers with the essential knowledge and practical skills necessary to actively steer their cancer journey. This program aims to empower patients in effectively managing the impact of cancer and its treatments, assisting in the restoration of a sense of control in their everyday lives. The creation process of the I-Can Manage program entailed multiple rounds of usability testing sessions and design ideation workshops.

My contributions to the development of the I-Can Manage program encompassed various responsibilities, including the establishment of the I-Can Manage brand identity, crafting illustrations across the platform, active participation in usability testing, and involvement in the UX/UI design. The latter involved the design and development of the e-learning modules using Articulate Storyline.

The Challenge

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be an unsettling experience, stirring anxiety and uncertainties for patients and their families. To address this, the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre aimed to develop an educational platform. This platform was intended to support individuals in navigating this new phase of life, equipping them with tools for self-management and aiding in the process of gaining control over their circumstances.

Usability Testing

We engaged in usability testing involving 7 volunteer patients, utilizing a high fidelity, functional prototype of the platform. Our aim was to identify problem areas and prioritize critical use errors. These tests were carried out in dedicated usability labs, equipped with two-way mirrors to facilitate video and audio recording. Subsequently, the notes and videos were methodically analyzed by categorizing use errors and assessing their frequency and severity. This comprehensive approach enabled us to pinpoint and address usability issues, enhancing the overall user experience for both the e-learning modules and the website's navigation.

The Outcome

The e-learning platform, I-Can Manage, was created and developed to deliver six tailored online courses providing educational content and practical tools for self-management to patients and their families. This all-encompassing platform offers an action planning feature, a resource library for easy access, and the inclusion of health coaches to guide patients in using the platform and tracking their progress. The design of the platform incorporates calming, friendly colors, engaging illustrations, and uplifting language, aimed at mitigating the impact of the diagnosis.
